DAR ES SALAAM: POLICE Regional Commanders from across the country have gathered in Dar es Salaam for a two-day training on protocols, regulations and guidelines concerning observing human rights during elections.

The training, organised by the Tanzania Human Rights Defenders Coalition (THRDC), aimed to empower the police regional heads ahead of the Local Government Elections slated for next month and the General Election next year.

Speaking on Wednesday, while opening the training, Commissioner of Police for Operations and Training, CP Awadhi Haji, commended the organisers of the training that begun.

“What’s happening here is a reminder for regional commanders on their fundamental responsibilities during this election period and other related matters to foster a broad understanding,” CP Haji stated during the opening of the training in Dar es Salaam.

He emphasised that the police’s primary duty is to ensure the safety of citizens and their property, asserting that adherence to legal standards is crucial in fulfilling this role.

However, CP Awadhi refuted the perception among some political parties that the police force is not performing its duties effectively or justly.

“I want to assure Tanzanians that the police are here to ensure the safety of everyone. However, anyone who breaks the law will face consequences in accordance with established legal frameworks,” he pointed out.

The Commissioner highlighted the importance in providing police commanders with the necessary training as they are key figures in maintaining public safety and protecting citizens’ rights in their respective areas.

He expressed hope that following the training, the regional police commanders will disseminate knowledge to their subordinates, fostering a unified understanding of human rights issues.

On his part, THRDC National Coordinator, Advocate Onesmo Olengurumwa, expressed gratitude to the Inspector General of Police for facilitating the training opportunity.

He outlined the primary objectives of the workshops, including the need for awareness over safe practices that uphold human rights.

“You cannot manage the security in elections if you do not understand the electoral laws,” Olengurumwa pointed out.
