DAR ES SALAAM: THE Minister for Industry and Trade, Dr Selemani Jafo has hailed the Tanzania Competition Commission (FCC) for the quality services that earned them the ISO 9001:2015 certification.

Dr Jafo said that is a milestone achievement.

The certification is a useful tool to add credibility, by demonstrating that your product or service meets the customers’ expectations.

Speaking in Dar es Salaam during the closing ceremony of World Consumer Rights Week, organized by the Tanzania Competition Commission (FCC) in collaboration with the Foundation for Civil Society (FCS) and other key partners, the Minister urged all institutions involved in consumer rights protection to collaborate and work professionally to ensure that Tanzanians enjoy their fundamental rights.

He also emphasized the importance of cooperation in safeguarding consumers.

“Without collaboration and professionalism, Tanzanians will continue to suffer. I also urge manufacturers to produce quality products affordable to consumers,” he stated.

Dr. Jafo further directed all relevant institutions to fulfill their responsibilities diligently, ensuring that consumers are well-informed about their rights and protected from exploitation.

Adding, he said obtaining the ISO 9001:2015 certification, a milestone it achieved during Samia Suluhu Hassan’s presidency.

He highlighted that this international recognition enhances Tanzania’s attractiveness for global investment and urged the FCC to uphold its standards to maintain the certification.

FCC Chairman, Dr. Aggrey Mlimuka, noted that the event served as an opportunity to educate businesses and other stakeholders on their responsibilities regarding consumer rights. He stressed the importance of adhering to laws, procedures, and regulations to ensure the provision of high-quality goods and services.

Following amendments to Consumer Protection Laws last year, the FCC has been granted more authority to effectively address consumer complaints and challenges.

FCS Deputy Director, Cynthia Bavo, highlighted ongoing efforts in partnership with the FCC, with funding from TradeMark Africa, to implement a three-year consumer protection project.

The initiative aims to: Raise awareness about consumer rights and responsibilities and Strengthen mechanisms for resolving consumer complaints.

Funded by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO), Ireland, and Norway, the project aims to ensure that at least 60 percent of Tanzanian consumers are well-informed and protected by 2027.
