DAR ES SALAAM: Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Energy Dr Doto Biteko is expected to officiate at the 14th Africa Internet Governance Forum (AfIGF), scheduled to take place next week in Dar es Salaam.
The high-profile event is set to attract more than 1,000 participants from across the continent and beyond, marking a significant milestone in Africa’s digital transformation journey.
Speaking in Dar es Salaam yesterday, Director of ICT Infrastructure in the Ministry of Information, Communication and Information Technology, Engineer Leo Magomba, said the forum will serve as a critical platform for dialogue on the future of digital development in Africa.
The conference will cover a range of thematic areas closely aligned with the African Union’s digital goals, with special focus on inclusion, digital governance and the expansion of ICT infrastructure.
“This forum is not just an ordinary meeting, it is a strategic gathering aimed at shaping policies and fostering cross-border collaboration in areas of digital transformation that are central to Africa’s development,” Engineer Magomba emphasised.
A unique aspect of this year’s AfIGF will be its targeted involvement of youth. The event will feature dedicated youth engagement tracks, providing an opportunity for young people from Tanzania and other African nations to engage in conversations on cutting-edge technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI).
These discussions aim to empower youth to understand the growing role of AI in shaping industries, education and governance, as well as promote innovation and ethical use of emerging technologies.
“Youths will not only participate but will also take lead roles in presenting their ideas and digital innovations. We are particularly excited about the sessions on AI, which are expected to provoke thoughtful dialogue on its integration into everyday life and how Africa can harness its potential responsibly.”

A significant highlight of the forum will be the unveiling of the Parliamentarian Track, a new, dedicated platform that brings together legislators from across Africa. This track is designed to facilitate high-level policy discussions focusing on digital rights, legislative frameworks and the harmonisation of laws across borders to support safe and inclusive internet access.
Legislators will explore ways to address pressing issues such as online data protection, misinformation and digital sovereignty.
Engineer Magomba also used the opportunity to highlight Tanzania’s recent achievements in cybersecurity. He cited the International Telecommunication Union’s (ITU) latest Global Cybersecurity Index, which ranked Tanzania as the first nation in East Africa and third on the continent.
The ranking reflects the nation’s significant progress in enhancing cyber resilience and establishing robust digital safety mechanisms.
The 14th AfIGF comes at a pivotal time as Africa continues to navigate challenges and opportunities in its digital transition.
With stakeholders ranging from government officials, civil society organisations, academia, the private sector and international development partners, the forum promises to produce actionable insights that will help shape the continent’s digital future.
“Dr Biteko’s involvement in officiating the event underscores the Tanzanian government’s commitment to driving inclusive digital growth and regional cooperation through multistakeholder engagement,” he said.
