AS Simba SC prepare for one of the most important matches in the club’s history, football legends and former players are calling on the entire nation to stand united behind the Tanzanian giants in their quest for continental glory.

Former Simba Head Coach Abdallah Kibadeni issued an emotional message to both players and fans, urging Tanzanians to join together in wishing Simba success as they aim to overturn a 2-0 first-leg deficit against Morocco’s RS Berkane in today’s CAF Confederation Cup final at the New Amaan Complex in Zanzibar.

“This is more than a match. It is a national mission. The players must carry this game with weight and understand that the entire country is looking at them for joy and pride,” Kibadeni said. “I believe it is possible to win this title. We send our prayers and best wishes that the dream which slipped away in 1993 can finally come true.” Kibadeni reflected on Simba’s painful near-miss over three decades ago and urged the current squad to remain humble and focused.

“In 1993, the title slipped from our hands in a way that was both painful and unbelievable. Let this generation avoid overconfidence, instead maintain discipline and bring it home.”

Former Simba striker Jean Baleke also expressed belief in the team’s potential, highlighting that the two-goal deficit is far from insurmountable.

“We are praying for Simba and for all Tanzanians to win this title. Two goals are not too many for Simba to overcome. What matters now is focus,” Baleke said. “This is not the time to talk – it’s the time to calm the mind and be mentally prepared. Every opportunity the players get must be used wisely.”

Former Simba midfield maestro Amri Kiemba emphasised the importance of Simba’s home form and tactical discipline. He believes that Simba’s structured build-up play and home advantage can be key to unlocking Berkane’s well-organised defence.

“If you compare Simba’s performances in the knockout rounds — in the quarter-finals and semi-finals — you’ll notice they are much stronger at home. Their build-up play from the back to midfield and attack is what sets them apart,” Kiemba explained.

“However, Berkane have a solid defence. They’ve only conceded two goals in the tournament. So Simba must be clinical with every chance they create. Yusuf Kagoma’s role will be critical in stopping Berkane’s counters to allow the fullbacks time to recover and plug any gaps.”

Kiemba also cautioned against complacency and stressed the need for tactical balance.

“Yes, Simba needs goals, but they must also respect their opponent. Attack with intent, but defend with discipline. What Simba needs today is maximum concentration and a high level of commitment to control this match.”

Ahead of the crucial CAF Confederation Cup final, Simba SC paid tribute yesterday to former Zanzibar President Abeid Amani Karume by visiting his gravesite in Zanzibar. The gesture formed part of the club’s broader mobilisation campaign, aimed at uniting the nation and honouring its history ahead of today’s highstakes encounter.
