KATAVI: A week after schools reopened for the new academic year, only 39 per cent of students who excelled in the Standard Seven national exams have reported to secondary schools to commence Form One in Tanganyika District, Katavi Region.
In response to this situation, Tanganyika District Commissioner Onesmo Buswelu has instructed that all Form One students should be permitted to attend school, even if they do not possess new school uniforms or shoes.
“I am directing school heads to allow Form One students to report to school without any hindrance, even if they do not have new uniforms or shoes. Parents and guardians are expected to provide these essential items as soon as possible,” emphasised the District Commissioner.
Furthermore, Mr Buswelu has instructed local government officials at the street, village, ward and district levels to locate parents or guardians whose children have not reported to school by 20th January this year.

This directive followed the District Commissioner’s visits to several secondary schools in the district, where he discovered that very few students had joined Form One.
“All students must report to the schools to which they have been selected. No one should be left behind merely because they lack new uniforms,” stressed the District Commissioner.
Tanganyika District Academic Officer, Mr Hassan Kituturi, also highlighted the importance of local government leaders continuing to monitor closely those children who have yet to report to school.
He urged that students commence classes without further delay.
“All students should report to the schools they have been selected for. There are ample classrooms available to accommodate everyone,” the Academic Officer assured.
