RUKWA: A 37-year-old man, Abdallah Malinga, was lynched by a mob of angry women in Izia Ward, Sumbawanga Municipality, Rukwa Region, after being accused of involvement in various criminal activities.

Eyewitnesses, speaking on condition of anonymity, reported that the women, armed with crude traditional weapons, attacked Malinga after he allegedly boasted about having killed someone.

According to the witnesses, Malinga was linked to a notorious criminal group that has been terrorising residents in several areas of the municipality.

“They have become a serious threat to the safety and security of people and their property in places like Mazwi, Bangwe and Izia,” said one resident of Izia Street.

Other residents echoed this sentiment, stating in separate interviews that the deceased was a member of the gang responsible for instilling fear and unrest in the area.

Rukwa Regional Police Commander, Senior Assistant Commissioner of Police (SACP) Shadrack Masija, confirmed the incident, stating that the police have launched a manhunt for those involved in the lynching.

SACP Masija revealed that Malinga died while receiving treatment at Mazwi Health Centre in Sumbawanga Town.

“The death of Malinga occurred after he was severely beaten by members of the public. He had allegedly boasted in public that he and four associates had killed someone, though he did not provide details of the victim before succumbing to his injuries,” said the RPC.

The incident reportedly took place on 16th January at around 1:00 pm on Mazwi Street.

“Malinga was initially rescued by police officers from the angry mob and rushed to Mazwi Health Centre, where he died while undergoing treatment,” the RPC explained.

He issued a stern warning against mob justice, emphasising its illegality and stressing that those responsible for such actions would face the full force of the law.

“It is absolutely wrong for the public to take the law into their own hands and attack suspects. Police officers are the ones entrusted with determining a suspect’s guilt or innocence,” he said.

SACP Masija pointed out that mob justice often leads to the wrongful punishment of innocent individuals.

“Police have begun a manhunt for the suspects involved in the lynching of Malinga. Once apprehended, they will face legal consequences,” he added.
