Ngara District is one of the eight (08) districts of Kagera region, Tanzania. The natives of Ngara are Hangaza and Washubi and they speak Hangaza and Kishubi. Before being called Ngara, it was known as Kibimba ie Pori. The main source of the name Ngara is a place that was known for meetings, which were held under large trees called imininya yingara. Thus, the Umunyinya Tree was planted by the Ngara district council as a memorial, as it bears the name of the Ngara district.
The residents of Ngara district are divided into two tribes, the Wahanga and the Washubi. According to the population census of 2012, the district has a total of 63,293 households with 320,056 people, of which 152,443 (47%) are men and 167,613 (53%) are women. The increase in population between the 2002 census and the 2012 census is 2.7 percent.
The economy of Ngara district depends on agriculture and animal husbandry activities. The main crops grown are coffee, bananas, cassava, corn, beans and sorghum in terms of food crops. The main commercial crops are coffee, bananas and avocados. About 95 percent of the residents of this district depend on agriculture as a source of income and agricultural activities contribute more than 94 percent of the district’s income.
