Ngorongoro Heroes claim CECAFA title

DAR ES SALAAM: TANZANIA’S Under-20 football team, Ngorongoro Heroes, secured the CECAFA U-20 Championship with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Kenya’s Rising Stars at KMC Stadium in Dar es Salaam on Sunday.

The win earned the team a 20m/-  cash prize from President Samia Suluhu Hassan in recognition of their achievement.

The Minister for Culture, Arts and Sports, Damas Ndumbaro, presented the cash during the team’s celebration.

He expressed pride for the team saying they are Tanzania’s future stars.

“These boys represent Tanzania’s future. Their victory highlights our preparation for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals in 2027.”

In a thrilling showdown, the Ngorongoro Heroes came from behind to clinch a 2-1 victory over Kenya in the CECAFA U-20 Championship.

The match ignited in the 48^th minute when Kenya’s Hassan Kitsao capitalised on a defensive error, scoring a well-placed goal after a slick assist from Aldrine Kibet.

But Tanzania refused to back down. Just six minutes later, Sabri Kondo nearly equalised with a powerful shot that rattled the woodwork.

Fuelled by determination, the Heroes ramped up the pressure and their efforts paid off in the 64^th minute when Valentino Mashaka levelled the score with a decisive strike.

Tanzania sealed their triumph in the 82^nd minute with a stunning volley from Shekhan Khamis that sent the ball crashing into the net, igniting cheers from the jubilant fans at KMC Stadium. Despite Kenya’s attempts to regain control, the scoreboard remained unchanged.

With this victory, both teams have qualified for the next year’s U-20 African Cup of Nations, but it was Tanzania’s day to shine, showcasing their grit and resilience on the pitch.
