For sponsorship reasons, the South African Premier Tier is known as the DStv Premiership, which is the highest division in the South African football league system. South Africa’s highest association football league is sometimes referred to as the Premier Soccer League (PSL) – the moniker given to the country’s professional football governing body.
It was established in 1996 as a result of an agreement reached by representatives of the National Soccer League (South Africa), the National Professional Soccer League, and others (South Africa).

South African football was shaken in 2004 by a match-fixing scandal. In June 2004, the South African police initiated an investigation under the codename “Operation Dribble.” Over 40 people were arrested, including club owners and match commissioners, as well as match officials and their aides.
